Stanford Disciplinary Matters
Nolan Barton Olmos & Luciano is located less than a mile from the Stanford campus. Dan Barton and Abbee Cox are graduates of Stanford Law School who are well-versed in representing college students in disciplinary proceedings at Stanford University, as well as other colleges and universities throughout the country. They draw on their experience in criminal defense to represent students facing Title IX investigations and proceedings for allegations of sexual assault, sexual harassment, or dating/domestic violence. They also help Stanford students defend against alleged violations of the Fundamental Standard and Honor Code.
Stanford recently overhauled its student accountability process with the introduction of the Stanford Student Conduct Charter of 2023 and its corresponding bylaws. Since this new system was put in place, Dan and Abbee have supported many Stanford students in making sense of the process and achieving favorable outcomes, including:
“Not responsible” findings at hearing panels convened by the Office of Community Standards;
Alternative resolution with minimal sanctions; or
OCS investigators declining to file charges at all.
Any student who receives a Letter of Concern from OCS, or the equivalent from another university, should consult with an attorney as soon as possible. This is particularly urgent if the underlying alleged conduct might also be charged criminally. Prosecuting attorneys can and will access student conduct records, so it is important for students to be aware when statements made in the conduct of university disciplinary proceedings may also expose them to liability in criminal court.
